SPOTLIGHT| Strengthening Mediterranean cooperation in Lebanon
The Director of CIHEAM Zaragoza, Raúl Compés, took part in a CIHEAM mission to Lebanon on the occasion of a special alumni event organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and CIHEAM in Beirut. An intensive agenda was organised around this meeting, including high-level political meetings, technical visits, and the signing of an agreement. This mission reaffirms CIHEAM Zaragoza's dedication to building stronger partnerships across the Mediterranean and supporting the next generation of professionals in creating sustainable agrifood systems for the future. ALLIANCES| CIHEAM Zaragoza is now part of the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance as a global partner. This collaborative initiative, driven by the Horizon 2020 projects S4D4C, InsSciDE and EL-CSID, aims to develop joint research projects, policy advice and training activities in science diplomacy. The Alliance facilitates dialogue, training, institutional capacity building and coordination in the pursuit of funding, thereby contributing to the advancement of the theory and practice of science diplomacy in Europe.

SYNERGIES| CIHEAM Zaragoza has signed a collaboration agreement with the Spanish Society of Horticultural Sciences (SECH) for the organisation in Zaragoza of the Fruit Growing and Citrus Production Congress in 2026, which will be jointly organised by both institutions together with the Agri-Food Research and Technology Centre of Aragon (CITA) on 16, 17 and 18 June 2026. The signing of this agreement and the joint organisation of the Congress represent a decisive step towards strengthening synergies between science, innovation and the productive sector.

COLLABORATION l CIHEAM Zaragoza strengthens Mediterranean partnerships at EMUNI International Summer School on Irrigation and Sustainable Oliviculture. SYMPOSIUM | New Models of Agri-Food Development Cooperation in a Changing Geopolitical Context

On 11 and 12 November, CIHEAM Zaragoza will become a hub for multilateral agri-food cooperation with the celebration of an international symposium organised in collaboration with AECID. IUCN | Building resilient food systems: A three-day training event brings together Mediterranean civil society organisations

From 23 to 25 September, CIHEAM Zaragoza hosted a comprehensive training programme on sustainable food systems as part of the Mubadarat capacity-building initiative. The event, co-organised by IUCN-Med, AECID, FIAP and CIHEAM Zaragoza, brought together 33 participants to explore the role of civil society in the design and implementation of sustainable agricultural projects in the Mediterranean region. [More information]

AQUACULTURE | Our colleague Bernardo Basurco attended Aquaculture Europe 2025 (AE2025) together with the team of the European project ActFast, in which CIHEAM Zaragoza is a partner. The event, organised by the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) and held from 22 to 25 September 2025 in Valencia, brought together professionals from science, education, production, supply and policy to discuss the latest advances and challenges in ensuring the sustainability of the sector.

ERASMUS+ | From 23 to 26 September, our colleague Joaquín Balduque attended the leading event on international mobility organised by the Spanish Service for the Internationalisation of Education (SEPIE). The meeting, held at the University of Valencia, brought together around 300 representatives from higher education institutions and Erasmus+ programme beneficiaries.

ANIMAL HEALTH | CIHEAM Zaragoza took part in the 30th meeting of the Mediterranean Animal Health Network (REMESA), held in Nouakchott (Mauritania) on 2–3 July. Our colleague Andrés Schlageter gave a presentation on Animal Welfare Regulation and Labelling, reflecting our growing involvement in animal health and food safety initiatives across the Mediterranean. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to explore future collaborations between CIHEAM Zaragoza and the REMESA Network.

EXPOCASPE25 | CIHEAM Zaragoza joins the Advisory Panel of ExpoCaspe 2025 to promote agri-food innovation in Aragón. The international organisation strengthens its commitment to the Aragonese agri-food sector by taking part in the 43rd edition of the region’s leading multisectoral rural fair. [Read more]

LEGUMES | CIHEAM Zaragoza took part in the annual meeting of the European project BELIS in Novi Sad (Serbia). The event brought together 65 participants from consortium teams to present progress, plan upcoming activities and explore key innovation pathways in legume breeding across Europe. The BELIS project stands at the forefront of integrating advanced technologies into legume genetic improvement. [Read more]

CEREALS | MED-Amin is a network monitoring the markets of four cereals (soft and durum wheat, barley, maize and rice) in the Mediterranean. Coordinated by CIHEAM Montpellier, the network aims to facilitate cooperation and the exchange of experiences within national agricultural market information systems and seeks to improve the quality of market data in a region highly vulnerable to price volatility. CIHEAM | Delegations from CIHEAM Member States gather in Paris for the 157th Meeting of the Governing Board

The CIHEAM Governing Board Meeting was held on 10–11 July 2025 at the Organisation’s Headquarters in Paris, bringing together delegations from Member States and observer organisations (OECD and Council of Europe) to discuss the Organisation’s main strategic guidelines and review the activities of the General Secretariat and the four Institutes (Bari, Chania, Montpellier and Zaragoza).
