SYNERGIES | CIHEAM Zaragoza and ANOVE (the Spanish National Association of Plant Breeders) have signed a framework agreement to promote cooperation in training, research and innovation in plant breeding. The agreement includes a professional internship programme for CIHEAM Zaragoza students within companies in Spain’s plant breeding sector affiliated with ANOVE, and the collaboration between both institutions on R&D+i initiatives and knowledge transfer to boost innovation in plant variety development. COOPERACIÓN | Visit by Irish experts to Malta as part of the cooperation agreement established between CIHEAM Zaragoza and the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights of Malta (MAFA). From 3 to 6 June, the delegation of experts was able to provide technical assistance and develop capacity-building activities through visits to local farms and specialised workshops for livestock farmers on the islands of Malta and Gozo. STUDENTS | CIHEAM Zaragoza student Nesrine Guesmi has received the Young Talents award at NutriForum 2025 with her scientific poster 'Effect of combining different feed additives on methane production'. GRASS CEILING Project | Women entrepreneurs in agriculture and the rural world confront lack of infrastructure, excessive bureaucracy, and leadership inequality
CIHEAM Zaragoza hosted the eighth meeting of the Spanish Living Lab from the European project GRASS CEILING on 8 and 9 April, highlighting that the gender gap remains a persistent obstacle in rural areas and the agricultural sector. Despite their vital role, women entrepreneurs continue to face significant barriers, even though they bring expertise, innovation and meaningful contribution to local economies and social development. GREEN NUDGES | CIHEAM Zaragoza participated in the first Green Nudges in Agriculture and Forestry Conference organised in Brussels by the European Economic and Social Committee. The conference, which presented pioneering initiatives such as ForestAgriGreenNudge, in which CIHEAM Zaragoza participates as project partner, and the PRUDENT project, brought together policymakers, researchers, industry leaders and stakeholders to explore how Green Nudges can effectively support the objectives of the European Green Deal and the forthcoming Common Agricultural Policy (CAP27).

COOPERATION | CIHEAM Zaragoza participated in the III State Meeting of Local Governments and International Development Cooperation, held in Gandía (Spain), a forum which brought together over 250 cooperation technicians, representatives of local governments, institutions and public bodies from across the country. During the two-day event, discussions focused on decentralised cooperation, the new international context, the regulatory framework, and cooperation and equality, examining models that promote women's participation and leadership in rural and local development.

SILVOPASTORAL SYSTEMS | Last June, CIHEAM Zaragoza participated with a presentation on extensive goat farming in Spain in the workshop "Innovation and resilience of caprine silvopastoral systems in the Mediterranean" in Chefchaouen (Morocco), organised by the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) through the Tangier Regional Centre for Agricultural Research.

PREVENTION IN AGRICULTURE | CIHEAM Zaragoza participated with a presentation on working conditions and risks in the agricultural sector in Spain at the 41st International Colloquium of the International Section of the ISSA on Prevention in Agriculture, held in Krakow (Poland) from 25th to 27th June, in cooperation with the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS), the SafeHabitus Project (funded by Horizon Europe) and the University of Agriculture in Krakow.

Scientific diplomacy | Teodoro Miano, CIHEAM Secretary General, was invited to speak at the 24th OECD Plenary Meeting on Global Value Chains, Transformation of Production and Development. CIHEAM called for a rethinking of agricultural and food policies in the Euro-Mediterranean area in light of current systemic crises. To address this complex situation, CIHEAM highlighted three key levers: innovation for food sustainability, strengthening of local and regional food circuits, and the recognition of the strategic role of youth and women. Official launch of the Meta BEANS Network | With the support of numerous international and regional institutions and delegations from Mediterranean countries, CIHEAM officially launched the Meta BEANS Network (Better pulses for Environment, Agriculture, Nutrition and Societies) during its first General Assembly, held at the CIHEAM Bari Innovation Hub. This initiative builds upon the MEDIET project, coordinated by CIHEAM Bari, which highlighted the nutritional, health, and environmental benefits of faba beans, lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans.
